WEBSITE - http://www.codynaz.com/index.htmlCHURCH CALENDAR - http://www.codynaz.com/calendar.htmlMINISTRY TEAM SCHEDULE - http://www.codynaz.com/ministry-team-schedule.htmlThis past Sunday our board had a leadership meeting. One of the topics that came up was our worship service. During the meeting there were various discussions regarding worship styles and how the church approached the worship service and church in general at various times in its history and what we do today. I believe that the board is concerned that we don't lose our heritage and that which makes us uniquely us, but at the same time I believe that they are interested in following Jesus command to go out into the world and tell others about the Good News. The culture in which we live today is different then when we, adults, grew up. There used to be a time when if you showed someone the truth in the Bible they would believe. Now many in our country don't recognize the Bible as truth or even in positive terms. The challenge we face is teaching our heritage and connecting today's culture with its historical past while catching their attention and presenting the truth of Jesus Christ in a manner that will provide a foothold for the Holy Spirit to work in their lives.
One suggestion that came about was to introduce the background or reason why a song was written. If possible someone should explain why that song has meaning for them. Our hope is that our church will begin to share with us different songs of worship that are important and provide an explanation as to why that song is important and share that with the rest of the church. If you have a song that is meaningful to you in helping you to worship, magnify, and praise God then please share it with Pastor Brian or myself.
This Sunday I decided to get things started by introducing what is essentially the first hymn in the Christian Church. "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" was written by Martin Luther in 1529. Martin Luther introduced congregational singing to the church. Prior to that time only the priests were permitted to sing. I will be providing more information about Martin Luther and this Hymn in our morning worship service. It will be short, I promise! I also hope you will look forward to this time with excitement. Martin Luther is not just some guy from the 1500's. He isn't just the guy who started church as we know it. Martin Luther was also a trouble maker and a radical.
I'm not sure if I will do this each week but here are some examples, I found online, of the songs we will sing this week. My hope is that you will take the time to review them and use them during the week to worship God. I am providing a few different versions of the songs so that you can see how different generations or cultures use the same message and communicate it in a way that is uniquely theirs, while being true to the original message. An important way for each generation to share with us in the historical message of our ancestors is to allow them to merge that message into their own culture. May God use this music to spend time with you this week in a fresh and new way that helps you see and understand the power and glory of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
